Conversation TherAppy

Oh, my. Has it really been over six months since I’ve done an app review? Time to get back on track! Update on me: I’ve switched from acute inpatient to a rehab facility (rehab, SNF, LTC). There are things I miss about acute, but I am excited about the new position, especially being able to use apps in therapy again! In other words, hopefully you’ll be seeing more of me. 🙂 The number one app I’ve used so far is Conversation TherAppy. The app has been out for a number of months now, but I’ve used it so much in the past two weeks that it’s impossible NOT to share about it. (And I even found a few times to use it in acute, so I’ll share about that, too.)

Dr. Panda’s Veggie Garden

I’ve been neglecting you Android users lately, so I wanted to share a little love and tell you about a relatively new app that works on both Android and Apple operating systems! It’s also one of the few kids’ apps available on Google Play to measure up to what is available on iOS, in my oh-so-humble opinion. 🙂

App: Dr. Panda’s Veggie Garden (Android) (Apple) (Amazon)

What It Is: An app for growing fruits and veggies in an interactive garden by TribePlay.

WhQuestions

Several weeks ago, there was a discussion within the SLPs Talk Apps group about various wh questions apps and the similarities/differences in what they had to offer. With that discussion in mind, I want to share my thoughts on this Smarty Ears app so that you can make up your mind about which app would best meet your needs! Look back at my review of the Super Duper wh questions app if you want to compare. I have also outlined some similarities/differences at the end of this post and included some thoughts on which app might be best for different users.

App: WhQuestions

What It Is: An app for addressing answering wh questions by Smarty Ears (developer) and Barbara Fernandes (author).

Talking Train

I’ve used (and even reviewed) apps by this developer before, so I was excited to hear they had a new app coming out and wanted me to review it! Life got in the way, so it has already been out a couple months now, but I am still thrilled to share it with you.

App: Talking Train

What It Is: An app that features a train with an engine and three cars that can be customized to promote story-telling, sequencing, and more by all4mychild.

“Talk Like a Pirate Day” Apps

Ahoy, mateys! I be writin’ a blog message fer ye ’bout apps to use on Speak Like a Scurvy Pirate Day! (Translation: Oh boy, who the heck convinced me to do this?!) Kookoo bananas Bill Binko ‘o LessonPix shanghai’d a few ‘o us bloggers to do pirate-themed posts to celebrate ’tis “holiday,” so here’s me best spin on it. (Thanks postlikeapirate.com for the goofy pirate talk translations.) This post is a bit different than my usual, but I’m hoping it’ll give y’all some fun ideas for Talk Like a Pirate Day on 9/19! If you’re one of those scoundrel SLPs that loves to get kids hyped up then send them on their way, this post (and holiday in general) is for you! I’m going to discuss three apps: one new (to me) pirate-themed one and two that I’ve already reviewed but am adding a “pirate twist” to. Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions or other pirate-themed ideas!

WH Question Cards – Pro

I am VERY excited to be reviewing this new Super Duper app that was just released last week! I’ve long used Super Duper’s flashcards for wh questions (both app and card versions), but this app is a totally different level of interaction! Also, you may have noticed I’ve been adding a few extra details to my blog lately (OS, Version, etc). Another addition I’ll be making is to provide the link directly to the app, either to iTunes or the app’s site, depending on what I think will be most useful. I hope this helps avoid any confusion about which app I’m reviewing as well as increases the ease of use of this site for you wonderful readers. 🙂 Enjoy!

What It Is: A collection of interactive games addressing wh questions by Super Duper.

Dr. Panda’s Hospital

To appease the masses, I’ve found an app for both Android and Apple users! Actually, I originally wrote this review after finding it on Google Play and didn’t realize until later that it was also available on iTunes! I was very excited that all of my readers could benefit from this one. Also, I had mentioned to a few of you that I found some Android apps similar to the Toca Boca ones on iDevices–Dr. Panda’s Hospital is definitely one of those. While this app is based on an animal hospital, the game’s set-up is quite similar to Toca Doctor. Here are my thoughts on it:

What It Is: An app for “playing vet” and healing hurt/sick animals by TribePlay.

Create a Car

So that my Apple readers don’t get TOO jealous of my new addition of Android reviews, here’s a review of a fun and inexpensive app for iDevices. I’m actually quite excited about this app because the developer just added new content that bumps it up from “good” to “great!” Also, this is another app for those “three T” (trucks, tractors, & trains)-obsessed boys and girls since there are quite a few vehicles to choose from–including trucks and tractors!

What It Is: A game for designing (and then driving) vehicles by ABCya.com.
